ekarimnagar : School sex racket: Khurana loses job
NEW DELHI: The Delhi Government on Saturday terminated the services of government school teacher Uma Khurana, who was caught on camera in a sting operation by a news channel which alleged that the she ran a sex racket. The step was taken on the recommendations of the special committee led by the Education Secretary.
On Saturday, Education minister Arvinder Singh Lovely also announced that, as a safeguard against the presence of such errant teachers in future, the Vidyalaya Kalyan Samitis in every school will also have four student representatives to give the students a voice.
In view of the riot on Thursday which put the security of children under threat, the minister said the government was planning to post security guards round the clock in all schools. A proposal to this effect would be prepared and brought before the cabinet for approval, the minister added. After Thursday’s riot at Turkman Gate, Delhi Government rushed to suspend Khurana. It also ordered an enquiry and set up a committee under the Education secretary, seeking a report in 48 hours.
Speaking on the basis for termination, Lovely said, ‘‘The committee acquired the CD of the sting operation, after the viewing which it was established that the woman striking the deal was Khurana. Based on the sting operation, the special committee suggested termination under section 3-11. The section allows termination without inquiry in situations where a special committee constituted to look into a case has reason enough to suggest the extreme step. Further investigation lies with the police.’’
According to Lovely, the report of the special committee shows that, while there were complaints regarding Khurana for poor teaching abilites and bad behaviour with students, there was no complaint of immoral trafficking from parents, teachers, students or any other staff members.
The committee found that the last complaint against Khurana was in June, when the Parent Teacher Association of the Sarvodaya Kanya Vidyalaya in Bubuli Khana complained against her. She was issued a memo to which she responded. Shockingly, the complaint came in the same month that she was transferred to the school from the Government Girls Senior Secondary School in Vivek Vihar, Phase-II, where she was suspended for poor teaching skills and misconduct in December 2006. Though the department now admits that ‘‘overall, her behaviour was abnormal,’’ Uma’s suspension was revoked in April, after which she wastransferred to the Bulbuli Khana school.
Regrettably, despite repeated complaints against Khurana, the department has only now swung into action.
